Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait

"Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno's Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is not a typical documentary film. In it, you won't see footage from the French footballer's greatest games. You won't hear other footballers talking about his legacy either. You also won't see Zidane's fans worshiping their idol. Instead, you would see ninety minutes of pure magic.

The entire film is actually a single game of football - Real Madrid vs. Villareal, played in front of 80,000 fans at the legendary Santiago Bernabeu stadium on April 23, 2005. During the game, 17 strategically positioned movie cameras, under the supervision of cinematographer Darius Khnodji (Delicatessen; Seven; My Blueberry Nights), followed the French superstar. That is it."

-Excerpt from Blu-Ray.com

"Mogwai's Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait doesn't have much in the way of catchy melodies, and its tracks tend to blend into each other — but these are precisely the reasons why this score is so effective. Droning, hypnotic, but subtly tense, this album is about crafting and sustaining a mood, even more so than the band's collaboration with Clint Mansell on the music for The Fountain. It's understandable why fans expecting another Young Team or even Mr. Beast might find Zidane too monochromatic: on tracks such as "Black Spider," Mogwai shift their famously wide-ranging dynamics into neutral, concentrating on the band's shimmering, introspective side; it's only toward the end of the over 20-minute hidden track tacked onto "Black Spider 2" that Mogwai approach heavier territory. Meanwhile, the moody piano and guitar themes repeat on "Half Time" and "Time and a Half," giving the score a unity that could seem monotonous separated from the film's context. However, while most of Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is the musical equivalent of a faint but still distinct shadow, several tracks are standouts, albeit subtle ones. "Wake Up and Go Berserk" — which follows in the footsteps of other ironically named Mogwai works like Rock Action and Happy Songs for Happy People — is a thing of bleak beauty, mingling vapor-trail electric guitar textures with looping acoustic guitar melodies. Likewise, "7:25" and "I Do Have Weapons" are also sublimely poignant, without ever feeling like they're pandering. It's easy and true enough to say that this album will appeal mostly to Mogwai diehards, but it's such a quietly accomplished musical portrait of one of soccer's most complex and controversial personalities that Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait could very well add some soundtrack buffs and sports aficionados to the band's ranks of fans."

Where The Wild Things Are: More

Check out these new pictures I scribbled together with one black sharpie. They are my personal depictions of the new Where Te Wild Things Are flick. This better not let me down because the book got me through my childhood...because I had such a rough childhood....okay, not really. But I always thought it was an awesome book when I was a little gromlin.

The mail has come...Pt. 2

It is a shame to post over that last one. Couple days late on the first round but Coraline (click here for HD trailer.) came today so I decided to consolidate posts. I had to re-buy Cars and Sunshine but they are both awesome flicks so it wasn't the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I had never seen Eastbound and Down but after being shown the following clip, it was pretty much a must have. North Carolina sucks...

Best Movie Of The Year

Sam Rockwell in Moon delivers a tour de france performance. That's Bone gives it two dicks up. With a musical backing done by none other than TB's favorite, Clint Mansell. It was nothing short of a powerhouse.

Now out on DVD: The Wrestler

I was lucky enough to see this flick in theaters, it's pretty damn good.

Blu-Ray bandwagon?

Just recently I started thinking about getting myself a Blu-ray player. For the longest time I was against it because of the gobs of money I would have to spend to replace our already thriving DVD collection. And I may be stupid, but I just learned how Blu-Ray players play DVD's and automatically up-converts the picture quality. That right there is enough for me. But if that doesn't do it then just take a look at my friends above...

The Dark Two Months..

Two months as of today marks the release date of life fulfillment. We're crawling out of our skin over here. The list of things I would do to watch this movie right now is all but legal. I'm camping out for the release, bringing a gun, if you are there for the same reason as me, all is quiet on the western front, if you're bandwagon bullshit; I'm killing you if you talk to me, killing you if you look at me, killing you if you breathe on me. Crystal clear? I was just kidding by the way, kind of.. The pictures above are hi-res huge motherfuckers, click and enjoy.

Joke's On You (and Me)

The day the new Dark Knight toys were released world wide we immediately geeked out, already online looking to get a hold of our buddy The Joker. At the time you could buy it one place online and it was already the most expensive figure. Numerous toy store trips, one faulty eBay auction, one great eBay auction and a few bucks later he is now part of the family. You can still buy him online but his price has increased $30 since his release. Try getting your dick beaters on one of these otherwise the later you wait the longer you are going to have to. Word on the street is that these sold out in stores in minutes, if they were even released at all in certain places. I cannot tell you how much I cannot wait to see this movie. P.S That is not the actual picture of mine because if you think I'm taking it out of the packaging then...haha.
